look much better under XUbuntu, but it was a long time since I tested.
It's not quirky, it's different but consistent. I agree that it doesn't look
best compared with the rendering of other platforms, but that's mostly taste
-- I like its sharpness, but it seems to be quite expanded or wide for my
liking.
Anyhow, the new freetype rendering seems to be quirky, as it doesn't always
produce consistent results, and a uniform look. That's something that you
cannot claim of our current solution, at least.
