Yes, assignfs is a unionfs. I think this is the most interesting aspect
of assignfs, among all those mentioned by Adrien. It can serve as the
basis for a pkgfs, when combined with an FS that mounts archives.
I personally see some other uses for it too. Users can create shortcuts
to common locations (for example, a union of directories containing
music). If there is interest for including it in the base Haiku
distribution, it would be nice to add support for them in FilePanel.
Another potentially useful feature would be to have assignfs change
permissions of the referenced files. That would be handy in a multi-user
environment for temporarily sharing files.
I forgot to mention that I'll be unavailable from Aug 29 - Sep 26. I'll
try to have a preliminary version of assignfs before I leave, so it can
be tested by whoever's interested.
This week, I will try to update the proposal on the wiki page based
on
the discussions on this mailing list. We'll have to vote for it at
one
point anyway, as it is impossible to please everyone.
The better solution should win, but there is definitely stuff open for
discussion.
I'll try to write a coherent proposal (biased) and offer some
alternative options where they are available that people can vote for.
