I'm using Google as my main search engine for years here, without issues
(not even language). (mostly on my host system)
Just checked, https://www.google.fr/ should give you the France interface?

DuckDuckGo seems to use the set browser locale to set its language and
search region by default. You
can also specify the search region via a dropdown. I've been using
DuckDuckGo for a long time and am
all for using it as default for Web+.
