Many thanks for digging into this, Julian.  Sadly it doesn't work with
the sources I've been using [around last July -- haven't spurred myself
to find out how to get going with git, yet...].  I get a KDL at the beginning
of boot -- something about 'mutex' (surprise!) but strangely the text
was on a dark grey background and hard to read.

The thread.cpp source didn't patch cleanly, so that's presumably the
problem.  I'll look to see if there's any obvious change that fooled
the patch.  Otherwise I'll try to 'git up' as soon as I can.
