It is foolish to think that we can define for ourselves when Haiku R1
is ready or not. The world at large will decide for us, mainly based
on whether or not their hardware works and based on whether or not
WebPositive renders web pages they visit correctly or not.
If the qualification for R1 final release is defined as a replacement
for BeOS R5 then we are already there, but if we are going by a more
subjective working desktop operating system standard for R1 then we
are not quite there yet. Updating WebPositive is the main thing that
is standing in the way of us getting to R1. The bad press we got for
our R1/B2 release, especially from ArsTechnica, is actually a good
sign. It means that reviewers are starting to compare Haiku against
other major desktop operating systems and finding Haiku does not live
up to that standard. Before R1/B2 Haiku was being judged as a hobby
operating system, so was given good press based on that standard --
either that, or the journalistic integrity of ArsTechnica reviewers
has taken a plunge off the deep end.
