There have been discussions. Many. The most relevant ones (as in: productive exchange of arguments) on this very list. You're just a year or more too late.

But I'm rapidly losing interest.

I have repeated the arguments for many of the decision made wrt. package management over and over again and I've already lost interest in doing that anymore. It's probably my own fault for not putting the arguments in the wiki.

Anyway, if you're really interested, you will be able to dig the relevant threads up. Unlike lately, this list is usually relatively low volume with a pretty reasonable signal to noise ratio.
