I think the default speed should be borderline usable for absolute
beginners,
-1. I like it as-is.
I have a Haiku machine next to me.
Using a standard logitech usb mouse, I can go from screen side to
screen side (1600 pixels) in less then a 1" movement.
This seems to all come down to personal preference. (which is why you
can adjust the mouse speed on any OS)
Keep in mind that BeOS generally ran at 1024x768 or less.
More pixels == further distance your mouse has to travel.
