I don't run Linux DE's so that is not on my radar but BeOS and Mac OS
X all behave as I said always opening new terminal Windows set to your
home directory. I can't remember what Windows does off-hande

I'm getting the impression that this is an intended feature so I'll
close this bug report as WONTFIX.
