Hi,

does the locale kit support localization of file names?

Some use cases:
* Especially the names of the (preferences) application as shown in the Deskbar application menu should be localized. * The print server and Printers preferences application expose the file names of printer drivers and transport add-ons to the user, these should be localized too.

Not yet.
Basically there are multiple ways of doing it, none of them seems right :
* Localizing the name as one would do with any other string, inside an application. For preferences, Deskbar and Tracker could handle that. But this means they have to know the list of files they should localize beforehand. Then, what happens if a new preference panel is installed ? * Using attributes to store the localized name in the filesystem and displaying that instead of the actual name. This mean we need a lot of attributes, one for each possible translation. Or a single attribute and overwriting it each time you select a new locale. Both doesn't look right * Have a special .catkeys file with all the preferences translations, and tell deskbar/tracker/whoever needs so to look in this file. Installing a new preference panel would append its name to this file. But uninstalling becomes problematic. * Fetch the name from the .catkeys file of the app itself. We could decide on a special "AppName" string in the catalog to always be available in all catalogs. But this means deskbar would have to open the catalogs for all the preflets, which would likely be slow. Also it wouldn't work for things other than apps.

Any better idea ?
