Afaik it picks the highest res that the monitor's EDID gives it, I might be wrong.
My monitor has a native resolution of 1024x768; it currently looks more like 640x480 or 800x600 on first sight. Should I file a bug report?

Some monitors have weird/bad EDID entries. I have one monitor which gives trouble in Linux and Windows (but works in Haiku actually, but I hope I still have a point... :-),

The weird/bad EDID data can also be due to the video chip. I have experienced this with the S3 video chips. With the same monitor some chips will return good EDID info, and other chips will either fail or return garbage.
