An alternative approach to investigate would be the commented out code in
platform_add_boot_device() [5], i.e. directly booting off the remote disk
instead of using a haiku-netboot.tgz. In this case it is important to make
sure the network kernel modules and drivers are marked as boot modules (cf.
[6] vs. [7]), since those must be loaded by the boot loader.

I will also try this approach in case it works better, it would make the
network booting a little simpler. Is there a reason it isn't the
default?

One reason is that net-booting requires different modules to be loaded, so one would have to build a different image/system package. Though I guess one could simply add another boot module directory for net-booting.
