Please help improving the ideas list:
- Adding yourself as "possible mentor" on ideas you can help
mentoring,
- Adding more ideas
How about (starting to) implement a system-wide spellchecking service
like what Michael Crawford aimed for with WordServices [1] in the BeOS
days? I don't have a clue about how and where to start, so I can't
provide any deails for this idea...
Maybe this service could even be extended in the future with some
(online) translation service.
- Discussing existing ideas (maybe some should be removed)
I feel like the "Other applications" idea category (i.e. improve some
app in HaikuArchives etc.) is a bit too wide and far away from
operating system coding.
Note that Outreachy allows non-coding ideas as well (UI/UX design,
etc), it would be nice to have some of these available too. They may
also help us finding a mentor to help with these.
If Haiku Inc. decides to fund Outreachy or there's a successful
donation drive for it, I expect the propsed project to be well vetted
WRT its usefulness to the project. Contrary to GSoC, it's now "our"
money. We should end up with something useful. I know, it's about
trying to garner new longtime devs, but why shouldn't we try to have
both?
I wouldn't want to see someone working on something like SuperPrefs
which seemed to be the result of a misunderstanding about what it was
supposed to be. That project didn't give us a new dev or something
useful...

Humdinger
