If you want to test your changes on one translator first, you could 
duplicate the base class into that translators code base, do you 
development and testing, then move it back into the base class and change 
all the other translators as well.

However, come to think of it, third party translators should still work. 
You could check it like this: If the BView pointer you get from a 
translator has the B_SUPPORTS_LAYOUT flag set, then it uses layout. 
Otherwise, you will need to wrap a simple BView around the translator view 
which translates from layout to non-layout mode.
