I think the above solution is a very good solution which is the most discoverable in this thread. I also think that the small target area is adequate for something one would rarely use.

Resizing the Deskbar window like every other window via
CTRL+ALT+right-drag is consistent. Additionally, a width setting under
"Window" in the Deskbar preferences would be nice and also improves
discoverablity.

If the idea is that one would change this setting only once, no draggers should be displayed at all, and both settings (placement and width) should go into the settings window.
