I think that the problem with fonts is that the patented stuff regarding hinting and antialiasing is disabled by default and you have to compile your own image to enable it. Note that Ubuntu 10.04 uses DejaVu Sans by default and it looks clear and it is absolutely readable. This is because hinting etc. is enabled by default. I have the opinion as Sean, but I understand that it is not the font that has problems, it is the default rendering options of Haiku that "break" an otherwise fine font. My 2 cents, Alex Bisogiannis
