SunOS is a verry old os, his end on 1994 after SunOS listen the OS Solaris.
In thime SUN have 2 OS:
- Solaris
- OpenSolaris

You are right in principle, but `uname --kernel-name` still reports "SunOS" whereas `uname --operating-system` says "Solaris".
