I am starting to give this a try on FreeBSD. The Haiku Pre-requisite page says
that this "Works very well" on FreeBSD. I'm having trouble from the outset,
though. gcc7 is installed, but it appears that the make and configure programs
are the wrong ones and fail. For example, in building jam. However, gmake
works. Can someone tell me if this is a known problem with FreeBSD? It might
matter that I'm using the GhostBSD variant. Do I need to install GNU utilities
to overwrite these BSD ones, as part of installing pre-requisites?

You need gmake to build Haiku cross-tools, and to build many of the FreeBSD
ports that were configured upstream mainly for Linux; also, among many other
things, to cross-build Linux toolchains.
