Secondly, I can't make checkfs work. I'm not sure what the exact format of the 'device' parameter should be, but whatever variant I use, it either comes back to the help prompt or tells me the device could not be initialized. (The same happens with another drive which I'm sure is OK.)
cd /MyDrive checkfs .Simpler than figuring out the device. Only works if you can mount it (from terminal it should be possible).
