Oh, certainly! I feel the same. There are plenty of things that when fixed would improve the smoothness of the experience, and I see you are already working on whichever of those you happen to stumble upon. :-)

There are several other small tasks that could be done and would help to get the best possible alpha version out (note this are not priority, but should be easy enough and would increase user experience):

1 - Live/Installation CD : Already being worked on and seem to mostly work. What we need to do is to detect when it is being run from the CD and show some specific links in the Desktop, like the Installer icon.

2 - Integrate Installer/Partitioner (even if only through a button) so people can actually create partitions to install Haiku to (is our partitioner able to create and initialize BFS partitions?).

3 - Make sure everything has a HVI icon. It seems some of the bundled programs don't have icons at all or use a bitmap icon (E-Mail preferences, for example).

4 - If we are including the bundled apps, make sure they also have HVI icons (Vision, Links, Pe).

5 - Create some user documentation so new users know what to check for. Probably mention things like attributes/indexes, replicants, mime types, and whatever else could be alien for a standard user.

So far our main excuse for not releasing anything was because we wanted the user to have a good first experience. I think all of the above counts towards that.
