I'm working on a project which is very similar to the mime-db.

I have the freedom to release it as an open source library (possibly
LGPL), so I'm wondering, is there any interest having something like
that integrated in Haiku?

Hard to say upfront :-)
If it actually improves anything, and manages to stay somewhat compatible, it would be hard to say no. The MIME database is pretty entangled in the system, and also has Haiku specific data in it.

But I don't really see what you assume to improve over our current solution; as far as I'm aware of, the only issues with our implementation is related to multi user and package management.

And also, as Francois pointed out, if it would be possible to reuse resources maintained by other people, that might generally be beneficial, too.
