From what i learned from BeOS and the dev newsletter i read back then - the
idea was that there is nearly every time a other way instead of a
blocking/alert windows. e.g. for videorendering you can have a Progressbar
in the statusbar and still "work" in the program. Its way harder to
implement but its way more smooth user experience.
In your case Maybe just make stuff disabled with the notification media
Server restarting.. and enable the ui parts when media server is running
There are also programs, such as editing ones, which can't use the
notifications. Think of a video editor progress window.
