I have to say I don´t really understand the difficulty people have with
DriveSetup. I does what
just about every manual partioning tool I know does. If you know what a
partition, a partition
type, and a fileystem is you shouldn´t have any problems with it (although
the video linked in the
ticket seems to suggest otherwise)
Correct, but, apparently, that's a big "if". It seems this knowledge is not
something we can expect
from our potential userbase. It's not this single video, either, it's a
recurring thing in youtube reviews
and in our forum and chat channels.
There were also some actual usability problems:
- Unclear labels making it hard to distinguish unused space, unformatted
partitions, etc (fixed)
- Use of disabled menus to indicate an action (specifically, formatting a
mounted drive) is not available, when it's unclear why that's the case (you may
not see that the drive is mounted if you're not careful) (fixed: now the menu
is enabled and attempts to unmount the drive automatically)
- It is not possible to change a partition parameters after creating it (not
fixed yet but I plan to look into it, the menu is already there but it doesn't
work)
The only real improvement to DriveSetup I can think of would be adding an
automatic (or guided)
partitioning mode like most modern Linux distros have.
That would go in Installer, not in DriveSetup.
In any case, no large changes planned to DriveSetup, it will remain as a
complete partition management system. It's just small changes, but it goes a
long way in making Haiku easier to set up.
I hope that the improvements will make youtube streamers/reviewers not spend
half an hour on this, be less frustrated, and then take a deeper look at other
parts of the OS for the next releases :)
