Great progress!! If I plug in my phone via USB and set it to USB tethering, is 
that the driver which will enable networking in Haiku? Or is that a different 
one? Do we even support that with any driver? :-)

No that is just a dumb "ethernet-on-USB-bus" device. I suspect any modem-like devices will require a bit more support from the system side (PPP etc.) Anyway you can acquire some more info about your USB device by issuing "listusb -v" command.
