While I like the feature in general, I think it's a) too

With a) you mean that it's not obivous enough that a window is showing
a filtered list? As in it'd need to change the background color to
indicate that?

Different background color would be one way; I would prefer (which
could be additional, though) if what I am currently typing is more
visible, maybe open an overlay in on corner of the window that contains
the text in full size, and is more prominently visible (similar to how
Nautilus does it -- visually, functionally, it's completely useless
there).

Fully agreed.

BTW there is also a visual bug when I use the typeahead feature: the
first item is not visually selected, but when I press enter, it's opened
directly. It should be visually selected automatically instead.

There is another bug: When the filter is currently active, and you change the attributes of a showing file, the file will get two entries in the list view. Each time you change the file, it will get one more entry.

As for b) I'm not sure how you'd envision it to work in icon mode.
But
right now it'll just gracefully fall back to the typeahead selection
(the current default) in icon mode, so I don't really see a problem
with that.

If you'd seen my desktop, you would know how I meant it ;-)
An overlay would work nicely in icon mode as well, and the icons could
either be removed, or grayed out (as they don't need to free up any
space).

This would work well for windows which show all icons, yes. For windows which need scrolling, some experimentation might be necessary.
