IIRC Marcus intention with this was because there were several problems with 
compatibility modes of the chipsets. In theory, every AHCI compatible 
controller should work -- one might just need to apply some magic first to put 
it into the right mood. Marcus will probably be able to tell you more about it.
Since there was some dirty magic involved, and the controllers actually report 
false PCI info until they are kicked at the right spot, I think we should try 
to come up with a clean way to correct PCI info afterwards.

BTW, please remove unneeded parts of the conversation instead of just include 
it all in your reply; it makes reading so much more convenient.
