IIRC, Mail simply cache current, next and previous entry_refs. These come in handy when the current entry (and selection) dissappears from the folder (or query) and make next/previous work as expected. I believe caching them, every time, makes it unnecessary for Mail to be aware of the sorting order. /Jonas.
