The other thing to bear in mind is, I'm not sure how old a system you
had in mind, but SSE at least implies minimum Pentium III, as that was
the first gen CPU to implement those instructions (there was MMX
before that starting with the Pentium MMX, but that one isn't
architected quite as well and consequently doesn't yield as much of a
performance boost, especially since it gets quite nasty to try and mix
with floating point code.
