It looks like MacOS does GUI only translations for well-know directories/applications. that's what Zeta did too. I do not think there is an option that is better than that in cases like this.

Actually, Mac OS X allows localizing any application name. The localized names are stored in a file named InfoPlist.strings and stored in the application bundles. So that means that if the names were not cached (I'm pretty sure they are), the Finder would have to read for instance "/Application/System Preferences.app/Contents/Resources/French.lproj/InfoPlist.strings" every time I would open the applications folder, just to show "Préférences Système" instead of "System Preferences" ;-)

Renaming the binaries could be a good idea, but it won't work when Haiku will be multiuser.
