It is an often requested user feature.

Just out of curiosity, can you reference any discussion or comments about
this? It surprises me that many people requested it, I don’t recall having
seen that anywhere...

In both cases, people seem to agree that the knobs look nice, but no one
asked for a setting to switch between different styles. My view is the
same as 4 years ago, let's have the line knobs and no setting to remove
them.

Configurable knob styles are captured in the "as in BeOS R5" part.

Also https://dev.haiku-os.org/ticket/6206 is another request for knob
styles (along with the rest of Scroll Bars features) from X512.

Remember that dots and not lines (and not none) was the default in
BeOS. Inspiration for dots style comes from here:
https://www.deviantart.com/master-of-design/art/Haiku-API-With-Background-283726527
but I didn't make them the dots go all the way up the scrollbar
instead I did it like BeOS did. Another nice touch of dots style is
that the dots shrink from 3 to 1 at the minimum thumb size. I admit
though I am partial to lines style too. Maybe if we made the dots
double wide it would look better. However... dots thumb style really
shines with an alternative thumb color.
