I think it 'solves' the issue because we're no longer changing things
on the SnB card in your system and preserving a boot state which seems
to appease your GPU.
I'd be in favor to revert those changes again, but maybe introduce (as a
first work-around) an option that prevents the driver from changing the
initial BIOS setup.
Since the BIOS usually sets up the system just fine (it has to,
otherwise you wouldn't see anything), it will just work in most of the
common configuration cases.
That's not an excuse to properly finish the driver, though :-)
