git doesn't work like svn and doesn't allow to explicitly tag that a
file is copied. It does content matching if you use git log --follow and
can then detect wether a file was copied from another.

Interesting, I only used cgit to view the log, and it doesn't offer
this feature.
Thats why I thought history was lost.

It works just fine if you try it with this file, tracing the history
back to the migration from CVS in 2002 (SVN revision 10).
Haven't tried this myself, but thats good to know.
