I've been seeing this too while trying to build readline-6.3 this
weekend (for libtool, then openssl, then every other readline
dependency afterwards). I noticed that CTRT+C seems to workaround the
problem like you mentioned. I looked in the syslog and didn't see
anything out of the ordinary, but I didn't do a binary search to see
when this behavior snuck into the build.
