Personally, I wouldn't mind leaving an opened mail as "New" instead of
"Seen". After all, as long as I'm not through with that mail and have
it set to "Read" (or some custom status), what difference does it make?

The only really difference is that you can distinguish between new mails, and those that you've glanced at. The only useful thing that I would see there is that the "New mail" count actually reflects the mails that you haven't looked at at all. Clemens could probably explain better why he introduced it in the first place :-)

It would even simplify things, as I just have to query for
status=="New" instead of or'ing status=="Seen" to keep track of things.

That's true, although not really an argument as it's a one time operation :-)

BTW I haven't tried Mail recently due to the IMAP problems (I'm still working on it on github occasionally), but it sounds like the unread button does what it should.
