The only reason I did add them was for consistant behaviour.
The cause isn't super obvious (especially as it only occurs on secondary 
architecture builds) and it may be a big red herring for the next person who 
breaks out a kit into a package. (although, looking back if there is some 
performance aspect I see no reason to keep all of them (maybe commented out?))

I would just remove them. ATM I don't see any other candidate for outsourcing and when the lines are commented they don't help anyone anyway.

I wish I saw this email before I put the work in to update the HaikuPorts 
packages for gcc :-)

No worries. We can just remove the lines now and rebuild the packages at an opportune time later. Given that an update to gcc 4.8 will probably happen in the not so distant future, that might be pretty soon at least for gcc 4.
