FWIW, I'm a fan of descriptive type names. And in the media kit it is
really easy to mix up performance, real, and system time. So IMO three
different types (bigtime_t for system time) would be good. Ideally they
wouldn't even be assignment compatible, but I guess that can't be done
in a backward compatible way.

Obviously it would be nice, if not only the API, but also the add-ons
and applications (in our tree) using the API were adjusted. :-)

Same thoughts here. Having different classes would be the best way to go, but would unfortunately break compatibility.
