I suspect the older ones will have other problems with port sensing and
such, unless you try to compile old driver with new compability layer.
Someone with good knowledge about interrupt handling and locking in
FreeBSD could probably try to improve our layer's interrupt handling.
Otherwise I think it would be good to discuss on how to improve at BG.
