Comment:

 Moving ticket to ACPI.

 I encountered a very similar bug on the netbook in question under OpenBSD
 5.0, which is currently running with ACPI disabled because of a temp-
 sensor bug.  Rebooting into Knoppix (Debian-based live CD) and connecting
 to a network seemed to reset something in the wifi NIC; it worked properly
 after rebooting into OpenBSD.
