Could this problem be hardware related?
I've just had a really silly idea, extremely unlikely because you've tried
with two different computers and you can read your usb disks - but did
these problems start when IO-APIC was enabled by default? There are a few
users experiencing problems with usb devices since then. On the other
hand, the problems with usb mice were fixed with r41759.
