 I managed to fix it by disabling 'Plug and Play OS' in the BIOS. (Hooray!)
 It now does not crash, and is able to mount usb devices. Typical. All it
 required was changing of some stupid little setting in the BIOS that I
 never even knew about. I still wish my BIOS would let me remap the IRQ
 channels, but never mind.

 Thanks so much for your help. I now have a usable PC!
