 Boy do I feel dumb.  I left the vesa disabled and was seeing the problem.
 With both the ATI and Vesa drivers loaded I can switch to all the
 resolutions and color depths.

 I have a Thinkpad A22m which is same as yours except the screen
 resolution, only 8M VRAM and a slower processor.  BTW I would be
 interested in discussing Haiku on our Thinkpads ..specificly APCI
 (battery, thermal, etc), sound, speed step and ethernet performace.
