 It's actually more hw-dependent. The reason being, a lot of the more 3D-
 focused cards nowadays have almost nonexistent 2D acceleration, since it
 mostly doesn't get used any more in the mainstream OSes thanks to
 compositing. As a consequence, they can sometimes be slower at using 2D
 acceleration hooks than by just using them as a straight frame buffer.
