I just found out that (in my case) it's not actually the
{{{~/config/settings/kernel/driver/vesa}}} file that does the magic, but
the {{{~/config/settings/system/app_server/workspaces}}} file. It, too, is
first created by changing resolution/depth in the Screen prefs.
So the procedure actually is simpler:
* boot into fail-safe VESA mode
* change resolution/depth, apply setting, revert to native
resolution/depth
* reboot
