I think there is a misunderstanding of what the "resume" field is doing.
What it does is remember the time position in the file, and resume from
there, instead of playing the file from the start.
I think there is no way to have MediaPlayer not remember which file was
playing. However you can uncheck "start playing automatically" but I'm not
sure if that's only on startup.
In any case we should see at least about improving the option labels.
