The "trick" makes the driver go "oh, there's no display so I will not set
up anything". So it's essentially the same as using the VESA driver.
As I mentionned in my forum post and already here in the comments, the
intel driver does not work at all for these newer devices currently. Up to
sandybridge it's ok, but the later ones we're missing support in the
driver.
