It's actually because the intel_extreme driver does not know how to set a
video mode. It works only with the mode already set by VESA.
I will look into actually doing modesetting for the modern intel
videocards, but I would prefer to fix the regressions first and work from
a sane base. There is some progress towards that, at least :)
