This is an option in the [https://www.haiku-
 os.org/docs/userguide/en/bootloader.html bootloader] "Blacklist entries"
 which you can use to blacklist {{{add-ons/kernel/busses/usb}}}.

 Indeed the usb_disk errors are gone blacklisting the usb bus.  This is
 sort of a strange desktop machine with some built in SD card readers ...
 perhaps they are connected to the usb bus?  Maybe I can open it up and see
 if I can disconnect them ... ?
