In the meantime, I connected both monitors (1920x1080 VGA) and (1680x1050
DP) and upon booting I got the lovely colour bar display I posted a photo
of earlier. I then rebooted and selected a display resolution supported by
both monitors (1280x1024) and now I have a normal desktop display on both.
