 I'm not surprised VESA is in trouble with Coreboot. I think the
 framebuffer driver for UEFI may be a better choice in this case.

 As for Intel, I had a similar thing happening on one of my previous
 machines (which I didn't keep long enough to fix the problem,
 unfortunately): it woudl boot to a working screen, but with backlight off
 (I could see it under bright light). And when I added a serial port in the
 expresscard slot, suddenly it started working. I think the extra delays
 spent sending data to the serial port change the timings just enough that
 the device initializes properly.
