 I think my scenario is a more common one. :)

You should have used the "revert" button, not "defaults", as that would
 revert things to how they were when you opened the window.

 I closed the Appearance window between tweaking sessions.

Maybe the "defaults" button, being quite destructive, would deserve a
 little warning in some cases.

 Or pop up alerts:
 - Revert all changes or just the settings for "{insert current tab title:
 Fonts|Colors|Look and feel|Antialiasing}"
 - Go back to the defaults for all settings or just for "{insert current
 tab title: Fonts|Colors|Look and feel|Antialiasing}"
