I'm testing with an Intel G45 machine today. It seems we really need this.
All our attempts to drive the LVDS panel at non-native resolution result
in a black screen. This happens quite easily if there is an external VGA
display, for example, since we try to use the EDID info from there also
for the internal display.
If I understand Intel docs correctly, the LVDS panel should always be
driven at its native resolution, and the panel fitter configured to take
care of the resizing so that whatever resolution we put in is scaled to
what the panel needs.
If we get this right, we should end up with a working "clone" display
setup, and one step closer to dual-screen support on these devices.
